Despite the country recording 1,000 COVID-19 related deaths, the disease does not hold the top spot for the biggest contributor to deaths locally.

Confirmation came on Wednesday from the Health Ministry's Dr Avery Hinds, Technical Director at the Epidemiology Division, during the Ministry's virtual press briefing.

"The number one killer has not actually changed with respect to NCDs [non-communicable diseases], cardiovascular disease etc., being responsible for the majority of the deaths that occur on a given timeframe," he said.

"It [COVID-19] has manifested itself as an acute change in the causes of death and that in and of itself makes it important,” Dr Hinds explained, “but that does not fall into the number one spot by any stretch of the imagination either locally nor globally."
