Officers of the Region Two Homicide Bureau were up to late yesterday afternoon, trying to confirm the identity of a man whose decapitated body was found in Damien Bay, on the North Coast.

Police said officers of the Blanchisseuse Police Station received a report of a body being found on the bank of a river, approximately 200 feet from the beachfront, at around 1 pm and went to the scene.

They were led to a sandy clearing, where they found the decapitated body with the head placed next to it, near coconut branches and twigs.

The man’s hair was in an unkempt afro with some plaits.

The hands were tied behind the back with a strip of black fabric, and a large chop wound was also visible across the chest.

Police said the man appeared to be of African descent and in his early to mid-twenties, with tattoos on the left side of his abdomen.

He was wearing a pair of denim short pants.

A motive for the murder has not been established; however, several murders have been reported in Blanchisseuse over the past four years, beginning with the murder of Sherwin Maharaj on February 21, 2021, on O’Connor Street.

Two years later, Maharaj’s brother Michael Evangelist and co-worker Nigel Dedier were gunned down at a job site near the beach front on January 27, 2023.

Months later, on April 22, 2023, Evangelist’s father, Carver Evangelist, was gunned down near his home on O’Connor Street, Blanchisseuse.

Police suspect the murders of this family over the years may be linked to a property dispute.

The discovery of this body brought the murder toll to 34 as of Thursday afternoon, compared to 50 for the same period in 2024.

For the month of February, there have been two murders, compared to six for the same period last year.
