Although police officers yesterday recovered the decapitated head of a man floating in a drain near the Maloney Walkover, the deceased was not identified up to Thursday night.

Senior police officials explained that while the head was recognisable, the identification could not be completed in the absence of a body.

A report was received by the Command Centre around 6.37 am that a human head was seen bobbing in the drain, which runs parallel to the eastbound lane of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in Maloney, just before Mausica Junction.

Arriving officers retrieved the head of the man following instructions by the District Medical Officer.

The deceased was said to be dark in complexion, with a low haircut and a neatly cut beard.

Officials speculated that the head had been cut off using a knife or cutlass, as the dismemberment was crudely done.

The head was handed over to officials at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, hours after it was found.

Meanwhile, a car found abandoned along the side of the Blanchisseuse Road in Arima around 3 pm yesterday, was believed to have been used to transport the head.

The vehicle was towed and taken to Cumuto, where forensic evidence was to have been collected.

Officers from the Homicide Bureau Region 2 are continuing enquiries.
