The decomposing body found under a mango tree in the Botanic Gardens, Port-of-Spain, yesterday morning, is yet to be identified.

The body of an East-Indian man was discovered around 9.30 am by a jogger who wandered off the paved path to investigate a foul stench in an area on the western side of the President’s House.

The jogger, who lives at Mt Hololo Road, St Anns, told police he visits the Botanic Gardens regularly.

Police said the victim, who was barefoot and dark brown in complexion, appeared to be in his 60s. He was dressed in a black jersey and black pants. A shopping bag was found nearby, along with an umbrella, several items of clothing and a towel.

Police officers believe the man had been living in the park, but foul play has not been ruled out pending autopsy results.
