The Diego Martin Borough Corporation (DMBC) activated its Disaster Management Unit at 11:00 a.m. yesterday in response to heavy rainfall on May 17 and 18 that resulted in several incidents across the borough.

According to a media release from the Corporation, field officers were promptly dispatched to assess damage reports, including flooding, landslides, and fallen trees.

The summary of incidents received includes five reports of landslides, five cases of flooding, six instances of fallen trees, one report of roof damage, and one affected structure.

As part of the emergency response, the DMBC distributed 11 tarpaulins and 25 sandbags to affected residents. Additionally, two power outages reported in Carenage and Petit Valley due to fallen trees were resolved within two hours by teams from the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (TTEC).

Clearing operations for landslides and debris are scheduled to continue on Monday, May 19, and in the following days as needed.

The Corporation expressed gratitude to its Disaster Management team, led by Coordinator Ms. Katty Christopher, and to its Councillors for their continued dedication to the burgesses of Diego Martin.

DMBC affirmed its commitment to ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, the Ministry of the People and Social Development and Family Services, and the National Commission for Self-Help to address all reports and damages.

Residents are advised to contact the DMU hotline at 800-DMRC (3672) for emergencies and to stay updated via the Corporation’s social media platforms. Sandbags remain available at the DMBC’s Orchid Drive office.
