A man from Ma­yaro who mur­dered his ex-girl­friend and her 18-month-old son in 2005 will be re­leased from prison in a lit­tle over sev­en years.

Anand Ba­boolal was con­vict­ed of the dou­ble mur­der in 2016 but last year the Court of Ap­peal up­held his ap­peal and sub­sti­tut­ed con­vic­tions for the less­er of­fence of Manslaugh­ter.

In sen­tenc­ing Ba­boolal this morn­ing, the Court of Ap­peal be­gan with a start­ing sen­tence of 25 years be­fore de­duct­ing the time he al­ready spent in prison.

Ba­boolal was charged with mur­der­ing 26-year-old girl­friend Ria Ram­lochan and her son Tim­o­thy Rag­bir in Au­gust 2005.

Ram­lochan's body was found in the la­trine of her home, while her son's body was found wrapped in a fish­ing net in the Mafek­ing Riv­er.

They both had been stabbed mul­ti­ple times.

Dur­ing his tri­al, pros­e­cu­tors re­lied on a con­fes­sion state­ment in which Ba­boolal ad­mit­ted he stabbed Ram­lochan and her son af­ter she at­tacked him with a knife dur­ing an ar­gu­ment.
