A man from Mayaro who murdered his ex-girlfriend and her 18-month-old son in 2005 will be released from prison in a little over seven years.
Anand Baboolal was convicted of the double murder in 2016 but last year the Court of Appeal upheld his appeal and substituted convictions for the lesser offence of Manslaughter.
In sentencing Baboolal this morning, the Court of Appeal began with a starting sentence of 25 years before deducting the time he already spent in prison.
Baboolal was charged with murdering 26-year-old girlfriend Ria Ramlochan and her son Timothy Ragbir in August 2005.
Ramlochan's body was found in the latrine of her home, while her son's body was found wrapped in a fishing net in the Mafeking River.
They both had been stabbed multiple times.
During his trial, prosecutors relied on a confession statement in which Baboolal admitted he stabbed Ramlochan and her son after she attacked him with a knife during an argument.
