The Child Pro­tec­tion Unit (CPU) is strong­ly urg­ing cit­i­zens with in­for­ma­tion on child abuse to re­port it to the near­est po­lice sta­tion, or to the CPU, to en­sure that an in­ves­ti­ga­tion in­to such cas­es are launched im­me­di­ate­ly.

The re­newed ap­peal comes as sev­en men and one woman were nabbed in an in­tel­li­gence-led ex­er­cise over the week­end, by of­fi­cers of the Child Pro­tec­tion Unit (CPU), the Spe­cial Op­er­a­tions Re­sponse Team (SORT) and the To­ba­go Task Force.

Po­lice say these ar­rests now bring to 28, the to­tal num­ber of per­sons charged for breach of the Chil­dren’s Act, for the year, thus far.

The ac­cused ap­peared be­fore Mag­is­trates in Cen­tral Trinidad, San­gre Grande and Scar­bor­ough, To­ba­go, on Mon­day 27th Jan­u­ary, 2020.

The of­fences range from sex­u­al pen­e­tra­tion of a child to sex­u­al touch­ing of a child and hav­ing knowl­edge of sex­u­al pen­e­tra­tion of a child and fail­ing to re­port it.

These of­fences are all con­trary to the Chil­dren’s Act 46:01.

Ac­cord­ing to of­fi­cial po­lice re­ports, dur­ing 25th to 26th Jan­u­ary 2020, an is­land-wide ex­er­cise re­sult­ed in the ar­rest of the sus­pects from the Cen­tral, East­ern and To­ba­go Po­lice Di­vi­sions.

The ex­er­cise was spear­head­ed by W/Su­per­in­ten­dent (Ag) George, and As­sis­tant Su­per­in­ten­dent of Po­lice (Ag) Sookdeo; and su­per­vised by In­spec­tors (Ag.) Boodoo and Bap­tiste, W/Sgt. Mor­ton of the CPU, with the as­sis­tance of SORT, To­ba­go Task­force.
