The En­vi­ron­men­tal Man­age­ment Au­thor­i­ty (EMA) has con­firmed that its in­ves­ti­ga­tions have found that the or­gan­is­ers of last Sun­day’s Josie’s Jamish­ness fete at the Bri­an Lara Sta­di­um in Tarou­ba, breached en­vi­ron­men­tal noise pol­lu­tion laws.

It is now mov­ing to be­gin ac­tion against the or­gan­is­ers.

In re­sponse to queries from Guardian Me­dia, the EMA said its En­vi­ron­men­tal Po­lice Unit (EPU) mon­i­tored the emis­sion of sound from the event and record­ed a 76.6 dBA.

It said dur­ing the pe­ri­od of mon­i­tor­ing, it was not­ed that the lev­el was 6.6 dBA above the noise lev­el pre­scribed in the Noise Vari­a­tion.

The ap­proved lev­els of the Noise Vari­a­tion Per­mit were 70dBA be­tween 6 am and 8 am and 85dBA be­tween 8 am-11 am.

“The EMA is cur­rent­ly tak­ing steps to is­sue a No­tice of Vi­o­la­tion to the event man­agers in ac­cor­dance with the pro­vi­sions of En­vi­ron­men­tal Man­age­ment Act Chap.35:05,” the EMA stat­ed.

The EMA cau­tioned event man­agers, bar own­ers, fete pro­mot­ers and es­tab­lished venues to ad­here to the re­spec­tive terms and con­di­tions of their is­sued Noise Vari­a­tion Per­mits.

“The right to en­joy en­ter­tain­ment is un­der­stood, but this right must be bal­anced with re­spon­si­bil­i­ty to the law-abid­ing cit­i­zens of Trinidad and To­ba­go,” the EMA said.

The par­ty, which at­tract­ed thou­sands of pa­trons, was the sub­ject of a com­plaint by Na­pari­ma Mem­ber of Par­lia­ment Rod­ney Charles, who told Par­lia­ment on Mon­day that the noise from the event af­fect­ed his prepa­ra­tion for the de­bate on the Mid-Year Bud­get Re­view.
