A dramatic scene unfolded along the North Coast Road in Maracas yesterday afternoon after a maxi taxi was pushed over an embankment when a tree collapsed onto the moving vehicle.
The T&T Fire Service said it received a call from a motorist at 12.58 pm, who said that there was an accident between the Maracas Lookout and the Spring Bridge, a stretch notorious for its tight corners and heavy forest cover.
Fire officials confirmed that a single vehicle, a maxi taxi, was involved. The falling tree reportedly struck the maxi and sent it veering off the roadway and over a small embankment.
Two people were on board, and one passenger suffered lacerations, while the other was trapped inside the wreckage. Responders said the passenger remained conscious and responsive.
Firefighting personnel used cutting and prying tools to peel back sections of the crushed vehicle to reach the trapped occupant.
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management and the Strategic Services Agency were notified about the incident.
