After work on Thursday, Nigel Mendes headed to his son’s school to pick him up. He never got there. His wife was picking up their son when he did not show up at the school when the police contacted the family with tragic news. Mendes’ body had been found in his vehicle whch had crashed into a drain off the M2 Ring Road in Debe.
The accident occurred a short distance from where immigration officer Selwyn Khan died in a two vehicle collision two months ago on Valentines Day.
At around 3.20 pm on Thursday, PCs Dass and Ramkhalawan were on mobile patrol in the area when they saw a white Nissan B 14 overturned and partially submerged in a drain on the northern side of the road. On closer inspection, they found Mendes’ body under the car.
Mendes’ wife was too distraught to speak with the reporters at their home at Coora Road, Siparia, yesterday. Two relatives, who didn’t want to be identified, said Mendes was well-known and loved, and a wonderful husband and father.
His son attends Debe High while his daughter attends a primary school in Santa Flora.
The relatives expressed concern that just two months ago there was a fatal crash in that same location where Mendes lost his life. They called for the relevant authorities to review the design of the road and implement safety measures.
The family was told that a post mortem will be performed after a COVID-19 test is done.
