Quick work by firefighters saved a $2 million dollar house from burning to the ground in Marabella on Friday.
The blaze was first spotted by Willis Peter who saw smoke billowing from the home of Devish Shah at 40 Bay Road.
Shah lives with his wife Kelly and their nine-year-old son Rishard who was at school.
Investigators said Shah was just about to drive out of his premises when Peters flagged him down and told him smoke was coming from the roof.
“We called the fire services and I went across and assisted him in taking off the electrical breakers, “ Peters said.
He added that by the time the fire officers arrived a few minutes later, part of the upper floor was engulfed.
Fire Service Officer Keith Siberan said four appliances arrived at the location but fire officers had difficulties in getting the burglar-proof open.
“We used the jaws of life to cut open the burglar-proof which was heavily padlocked, “ Siberan added.
He said 35 per cent of the upper floor was razed and the entire lower floor was waterlogged.
Damages were estimated to be over $500,000.
Shah declined to speak about the fire and the damage saying the media could not help him and he was already facing problems because of the blaze.
Officers of the Marabella Police Station visited the scene.
Fire Prevention Officers were expected to revisit the scene. Sources told Guardian Media it was too early to determine the cause of the blaze but said preliminary investigations suggest the fire started near the air conditioning unit and spread to the PVC ceiling.
Investigations are continuing.
