The Guyana government says it intends to outline a “comprehensive plan of action” later on Wednesday in response to the collapse of the Stabroek Market Wharf earlier, resulting in at least five being people taken to hospital with injuries.
President Dr Irfaan Ali headed a team of government ministers, including Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn and Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, that toured the area in the heart of the capital.
Ali later informed vendors and other stakeholders that the government would collaborate with the Mayor and City Council to chart a course forward.
A government statement issued afterwards said, “A comprehensive plan of action will be issued no later than 16:30 hrs (local time), outlining the steps to be taken in response to the situation”.
Indar said not only were persons vending in the wooden structures but some were actually living there.
