Professor Brinsley Samaroo, former government minister and Professor Emeritus at The University of the West Indies, has passed away.
Professor Samaroo, 84, had been hospitalised for the past few days and today his family confirmed his passing.
The renowned historian served as an Opposition Senator during the Second Republican Parliament.
He was subsequently elected to the House of Representatives in 1986 as the Member for Nariva.
During the Third Republican Parliament, he served as a Minister of Government.
Professor Samaroo also dedicated his career to teaching history at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago.
In a statement, Mayaro MP Rushton Paray said Dr Samaroo's commitment to knowledge and sharing his expertise was unwavering throughout his five-decade-long tenure.
"He left an enduring legacy in both academia and politics, shaping the understanding of New World and South Asian history and leaving a lasting impact for future generations, " MP Paray said.
