Pro­fes­sor Brins­ley Sama­roo, for­mer gov­ern­ment min­is­ter and Pro­fes­sor Emer­i­tus at The Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies, has passed away.

Pro­fes­sor Sama­roo, 84, had been hos­pi­talised for the past few days and to­day his fam­i­ly con­firmed his pass­ing.

The renowned his­to­ri­an served as an Op­po­si­tion Sen­a­tor dur­ing the Sec­ond Re­pub­li­can Par­lia­ment.

He was sub­se­quent­ly elect­ed to the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives in 1986 as the Mem­ber for Nar­i­va.

Dur­ing the Third Re­pub­li­can Par­lia­ment, he served as a Min­is­ter of Gov­ern­ment.

Pro­fes­sor Sama­roo al­so ded­i­cat­ed his ca­reer to teach­ing his­to­ry at the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies, St. Au­gus­tine, Trinidad and To­ba­go.

In a state­ment, Ma­yaro MP Rush­ton Paray said Dr Sama­roo's com­mit­ment to knowl­edge and shar­ing his ex­per­tise was un­wa­ver­ing through­out his five-decade-long tenure.

"He left an en­dur­ing lega­cy in both acad­e­mia and pol­i­tics, shap­ing the un­der­stand­ing of New World and South Asian his­to­ry and leav­ing a last­ing im­pact for fu­ture gen­er­a­tions, " MP Paray said.
