Four employees of Ramco Industries Limited were injured after a fire erupted at the company’s Union Hall, San Fernando compound last night.
Police said the employees were hurt after the fire erupted following an explosion at the filling area around 7.05 pm.
Firefighters from the nearby Mon Repos Station responded to the Shafik Drive location and were able to contain the fire, while emergency services escorted the injured workers to the San Fernando General Hospital for treatment.
Energy Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal visited the scene and noted that while fire officers were able to contain the blaze, workers were seriously injured.
“Regrettably, four employees have been injured. They have been taken to the San Fernando General Hospital and we understand that two may be serious and we are monitoring that in collaboration with the authorities and (Health) Minister Lackram Bodoe himself was informed,” Moonilal said at the site.
He said his prayers were with the injured workers and their families.
Moonilal said he was briefed by owner Imtiaz Rahaman about what took place after he got to the scene. He also confirmed that an incident report from the TTFS is expected to be compiled and presented to him today. He further noted that the Occupational Safety and Health Agency will be activated to conduct the necessary investigations. He also lauded the firefighters for their work in containing the fire.
The incident left residents of Union Hall in fear, with some evacuating their homes after the explosion reportedly sent projectiles into the air.
Guardian Media was told that a National Petroleum gas station in Duncan Village was temporarily closed as a result of the incident due to safety concerns.
Ramco Industries Limited provides LPG filling, distribution, cylinder maintenance and testing services.
