French and English-speaking Caribbean countries rattled by earthquakes

Sev­er­al Caribbean coun­tries were rat­tled by two earth­quakes that oc­curred with­in an eight hour pe­ri­od on Mon­day, ac­cord­ing to the Trinidad-based Seis­mic Re­search Cen­tre (SRC) at the St. Au­gus­tine cam­pus of the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies (UWI).

Ac­cord­ing to the SRC, the last tremor oc­curred at 9:40 am (lo­cal time) and had a mag­ni­tude of 3.9. It was lo­cat­ed Lat­i­tude 11.86N, Lon­gi­tude 61.05W and at a depth of 17 kilo­me­tres (km).

The tremor was felt 80 km east-south-east of St. George’s (the Grena­di­an cap­i­tal), and 137 km north-north-east of Ari­ma (in east Trinidad).

The SRC said that the first quake, with a mag­ni­tude of 3.6, oc­curred at 1:31 am (lo­cal time) and was lo­cat­ed at Lat­i­tude 15.82N, Lon­gi­tude 60.87W and at a depth of 19 km.

It was felt 81 km south-east of Roseau (the cap­i­tal of Do­mini­ca), 88 km south-east of Guade­loupe’s cap­i­tal Point-à-Pitre, and 137 km north of Fort-de-France, the cap­i­tal of Mar­tinique, the oth­er French Caribbean is­land af­fect­ed by the quake.

The SRC said that there were no im­me­di­ate re­ports of dam­age or in­juries from the two earth­quakes that rat­tled the is­lands. —(CMC)
