After Hurricane Beryl's passage, 13 Water and Sewerage Authority's water treatment plants were fully restored and four others were expected to be back in operation by 6 pm yesterday. Electricity supply was also to be restored to a few areas in Tobago by 6 pm yesterday as well.
Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales gave an update in the Senate yesterday responding to questions by Opposition Senator Wade Mark on actions being taken by WASA and T&TEC to expedite restoration of services to communities affected by the hurricane's passage.
Gonzales commended first responders from agencies involved who were fully mobilised to provide support to communities which he said "may and could have been" seriously impacted by the hurricane.
Gonzales said agencies which fall under his ministry and those from other State agencies, "Have been out doing great work providing support to all government agencies and as a result of that, I'm pleased to report that from the Public Utilities sector, 13 of WASA's plants have been fully restored to full operation with four plants out of operation and we expect those plants would be fully restored by 6 pm, today (Tuesday)."
"With respect to T&TEC, I'm also pleased to report that in Trinidad all areas that have been impacted by severe weather conditions, their electricity supply has been fully restored and in Tobago 98 per cent of the affected areas, electricity services have been fully restored and we expect by 6 pm today (Tuesday) the areas that have been out of electricity, they'd be fully restored," he added.
On whether additional water-trucking services will be provided to areas left without a supply due to water treatment plans not operating, Gonzales said WASA's call centre was operating 24 hours to provide help.
