The gov­ern­ment has ex­tend­ed the term of Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er, Er­la Hare­wood-Christo­pher.

The de­ci­sion came via a state­ment on Mon­day af­ter­noon.

She was ap­point­ed and ap­proved by the Par­lia­ment in Feb­ru­ary 2023. When she reached age 60 in May 2023, the con­tract was ex­tend­ed by the Cab­i­net for a year.

The ex­ten­sion of Hare­wood-Christo­pher's con­tract comes as the coun­try re­cent­ly marked over 200 mur­ders.

Dur­ing the 101st TTPS Sport and Fam­i­ly Day on Sat­ur­day at the Po­lice Train­ing Acad­e­my, St James, Hare­wood-Christo­pher avoid­ed ques­tions from the me­dia fol­low­ing a prize-giv­ing cer­e­mo­ny.

How­ev­er, she called for uni­ty with­in the T&T Po­lice Ser­vice dur­ing an ad­dress at the event.

Last week, the Court of Ap­peal dis­missed an ap­peal over the Gov­ern­ment's move to ex­tend the term of Po­lice Com­mis­sion­er Er­la Hare­wood-Christo­pher by a year be­fore she at­tained re­tire­ment age last year.

De­liv­er­ing an oral judg­ment, Ap­pel­late Judges Prakash Moo­sai, Mark Mo­hammed, and James Aboud re­ject­ed the ap­peal that was brought by po­lit­i­cal and so­cial ac­tivist Ravi Bal­go­b­in Ma­haraj af­ter his case was dis­missed by High Court Judge Ricky Rahim in Jan­u­ary.

The out­come of the case cleared the way for the Cab­i­net to de­cide whether to ex­tend Hare­wood-Christo­pher's term by an­oth­er year be­fore she cel­e­brates her birth­day on Tues­day.
