The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services (MSDFS) will allocate $5 million for the first phase of construction of a homeless facility in Port-of-Spain, that will host 180 people.
This is according to the Public Sector Investment Programme for 2023.
The money is to commence designs and civil works for the construction of an Assessment and Socially Displaced Centre at Foundry Road in Port-of-Spain.
"The five-storey facility will offer a viable alternative to street dwelling in Port of Spain and will accommodate 180 persons," the document said.
The Ministry will also receive an investment of $4 million for the provision of transitional facilities for socially displaced persons.
The document said that the Ministry will embark on the following activities in fiscal 2023:
• refurbishment of six apartment buildings in Penal for the establishment of the Penal Transitional Housing Facility;
• outfitting of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) hostel located at Cipriani Boulevard in Port of Spain; and
• refurbishment of two properties at Beaumont Hill at Point-a-Pierre and construction of a perimeter fence to secure the properties.
