Police raided a house in Point Fortin and arrested a man after seizing two live hand grenades and four white-fronted capuchin monkeys believed to have been smuggled in from the Venezuelan mainland.
The 28-year-old suspect, who works part-time as a rigger and fishermen, is now under interrogation at the Penal Police station.
Investigators said around 7.10 pm Wednesday, a party of officers from the South Western Divisional Task Force, led by Sgt Sheldon Ablacksingh and including Cpl Harripersad, Actg Cpl Singh, Actg Cpl Marsh and PC Ajai Jaglal, went to TNA Road, Number 2 in Point Fortin where they executed a search.
The monkeys were found in a cage measuring about two feet by four feet and appeared dehydrated. Within hours of the raid, one of the monkeys died.
The grenades were found in a room of the house.
Police said the suspect will be charged for possession of prohibited weapons and of protected animals without a permit. The charges will be laid by Game Warden Steve Seepersad and Jaglal. Investigators said the suspect will appear before a Point Fortin Magistrate on Friday to answer the charges.
