Two security guards chased after a thief and shot him in the leg after he stole a cellphone from a Heritage site on Easter Monday.
Investigators said around 9 am, the officers were on duty at Block 10 Heritage Guapo when the thief walked into the guard booth and picked up a Samsung cellphone valued at $1500. He then walked away.
The guards chased after the thief who ran along Field Road into a resident’s house.
The resident and his wife were sitting under a shed in front of his house when they ran into the house and knocked down a 40” LG flatscreen television.
He grabbed a kitchen knife, ran out of the house and confronted the two guards.
One of the guards drew his company-issued firearm and fired two rounds of ammunition hitting the thief in the right hand and left calf.
The man ran along the roadway where he was eventually held.
A struggle ensued and the thief attacked the security guard and escaped.
A manhunt was set up and the thief was later arrested in a forested area of Mc Kenzie Road Point Fortin by officers of the Point Fortin Police Station.
He is now warded in a stable condition at the Point Fortin Hospital. Investigations are continuing.
