Residents across several areas in north-east Trinidad are experiencing water supply disruptions following heavy overnight rainfall that affected operations at several surface water treatment facilities.
According to a status update issued by the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) at 11:00 a.m. today, flooding and river overflow have caused high turbidity and clogged screens at multiple facilities. This has hindered water treatment operations in communities from Toco to St. Joseph.
The affected facilities and areas include:
-Tompire – Impacting residents in Toco and Balandra
-Quare – Affecting parts of Valencia
-Guanapo – Servicing parts of Arima, Pinto Road, Mt. Pleasant, and Calvary Hill, has since returned to service
-Aripo – Affecting Santa Rosa Heights, Pinto Road, parts of Tumpuna Road, and Valencia
-Matura – Causing a disruption in Matura
-North Oropouche – Interrupting service to Maloney, Carapo, Malabar, Five Rivers, Tumpuna, Sangre Grande, Manzanilla and environs
-L&N – Disrupting supply in parts of Maracas and St. Joseph
WASA stated that the problems stem mainly from flooded rivers and excessive sedimentation obstructing key water intake infrastructure.
“The Authority will continue to provide updates as every effort is being made to return these facilities to service at the earliest possible time,” the release noted.
