The Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Min­is­ter is lament­ing the prob­lem of gangs in this coun­try.

Min­is­ter Hinds was speak­ing at a news con­fer­ence short­ly af­ter mid­night on Mon­day at the Port-of-Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal (PoS­GH) fol­low­ing the killing of 3 men in Gon­za­les and an­oth­er at the hos­pi­tal.

A to­tal of 8 peo­ple were shot at by armed as­sailants.

Hinds said he was “dis­turbed” by the in­ci­dent.

Flanked by the Head of the Homi­cide Bu­reau of In­ves­ti­ga­tions, Se­nior Su­per­in­ten­dent Rishi Singh, Hinds quot­ed sta­tis­tics that point­ed to 65 per cent of the mur­ders in this coun­try be­ing gang-re­lat­ed. 

He said this was the re­al­i­ty even with the pres­ence of an­ti-gang leg­is­la­tion.

The Min­is­ter then called on mem­bers of the com­mu­ni­ties where these gangs are preva­lent to speak up and pro­vide in­for­ma­tion to the po­lice.
