Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley and National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds have both expressed serious concerns about the behaviour of TTPS officers following a fete at the Queen’s Park Savannah on June 16.
The incident occurred following the Jam Naked event, which was held between 3 am and 9 am last Thursday.
The video captured several officers attempting to detain two men who did not appear to be complying with instructions, following which the officers were seen throwing one man to the ground and punching and kicking him in the head.
Questioned yesterday about the level of aggression meted out by the uniformed officers, Hinds confirmed that Rowley, who is still out of the country, has viewed the videos which were posted to social media.
The minister revealed, “He made immediate contact with me as his Minister of National Security, expressing serious concern.”
Hind said he too had viewed the viral videos and had forwarded their concerns to acting Police Commissioner Mc Donald Jacob, who had been asked to provide a report on the matter.
The minister said he received a preliminary report from Jacob before 2 pm yesterday. He said that he had not been able to “peruse and to study” the report as he prepared to attend two public engagements.
Hinds added, “For the time being, it looks like one of those issues in Trinidad and Tobago that almost invariably leads to bacchanal and confusion and a meltdown, but I am not yet aware of the exact facts and the details. I await them as well, and I am sure that the processes will take their course.”
