A sus­pect­ed hit­man was shot and killed by an off-du­ty po­lice of­fi­cer along the La­dy Chan­cel­lor Hill in St Ann’s on Wednes­day night.

Po­lice said the man, iden­ti­fied as Franklyn De Fre­itas, was shot dead af­ter he and two of his ac­com­plices at­tempt­ed to shoot the of­fi­cer as he was jog­ging.

De­tails are still sketchy but Guardian Me­dia un­der­stands that De Fre­itas and his ac­com­plices were in a car, li­censed PBZ 2192, which pulled along­side the off du­ty of­fi­cer while he was jog­ging along the hill, which is a pop­u­lar sport for fit­ness en­thu­si­asts, around 7 pm.

The oc­cu­pants of the ve­hi­cle re­port­ed­ly shot at the of­fi­cer, who im­me­di­ate­ly drew his li­censed firearm and re­turned fire at the sus­pects.

De Fre­itas, of Rich Plain, Diego Mar­tin, was hit and died on the scene but the oth­er two sus­pects aban­doned the car and ran away.

Po­lice of­fi­cers re­spond­ing to the in­ci­dent sub­se­quent­ly launched a man­hunt and an­oth­er sus­pect, who was al­so shot, was found soon af­ter­wards.

Ban­dits shoot guard dur­ing rob­bery

South­ern po­lice are search­ing for two men who shot a se­cu­ri­ty of­fi­cer dur­ing a rob­bery at a Chi­nese gro­cery in La Brea.

Po­lice said around 4.30 pm, the two armed as­sailants en­tered the Wel­come Gro­cery and an­nounced a hold-up.

Dur­ing the rob­bery, the se­cu­ri­ty of­fi­cer was shot in his left arm and up­per leg. The ban­dits then es­caped with a quan­ti­ty of mon­ey.

Po­lice said the se­cu­ri­ty guard's in­juries were not life-threat­en­ing. He is be­ing treat­ed at the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal.
