A man, who police described as having no fixed place of residence, was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation after a St Clair fire yesterday morning.
According to reports, the man said he heard someone threatening him at around 6.30 am and locked himself inside a structure at the corner of Gray and Alcazar Streets.
Shortly after, the man reported seeing smoke and fire in the building and was helped out of the burning property by passers-by.
He was taken to the hospital, where he remained up to yesterday afternoon.
Fire officers from the Wrightson Road Fire Station visited the scene and extinguished the blaze, while officers of the Port of Spain CID also arrived on the scene.
Technicians from the T&T Electricity Corporation also visited the area and secured electrical components from nearby connections and transformers.
Investigators said the two-storey building, which is composed mostly of concrete with some wooden components, sustained some damage.
Sources confirmed the property was scheduled for demolition.
