A man, who po­lice de­scribed as hav­ing no fixed place of res­i­dence, was tak­en to the hos­pi­tal for smoke in­hala­tion af­ter a St Clair fire yes­ter­day morn­ing.

Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, the man said he heard some­one threat­en­ing him at around 6.30 am and locked him­self in­side a struc­ture at the cor­ner of Gray and Al­cazar Streets.

Short­ly af­ter, the man re­port­ed see­ing smoke and fire in the build­ing and was helped out of the burn­ing prop­er­ty by passers-by.

He was tak­en to the hos­pi­tal, where he re­mained up to yes­ter­day af­ter­noon.

Fire of­fi­cers from the Wright­son Road Fire Sta­tion vis­it­ed the scene and ex­tin­guished the blaze, while of­fi­cers of the Port of Spain CID al­so ar­rived on the scene.

Tech­ni­cians from the T&T Elec­tric­i­ty Cor­po­ra­tion al­so vis­it­ed the area and se­cured elec­tri­cal com­po­nents from near­by con­nec­tions and trans­form­ers.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors said the two-storey build­ing, which is com­posed most­ly of con­crete with some wood­en com­po­nents, sus­tained some dam­age.

Sources con­firmed the prop­er­ty was sched­uled for de­mo­li­tion.
