A man who was shot during an attempted home invasion in Carnbee, Tobago, stunned police confessing to the crime while being treated at the Scarborough General Hospital.

Police said the man called police himself, and was transported to hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred around 3.20 am on Sunday at a house in Sherwood Court, Sherwood Park. Police reports said the homeowner, a businessman and licensed firearm holder, was alerted by a noise outside and spotted a shadowy figure near his bedroom window.

According to investigators, the homeowner armed himself and checked the southern entrance of his house, where he saw the intruder climbing over a barrier and moving closer to the entrance. The suspect had his face partially covered.

Police said the homeowner, fearing for his safety and that of his family, fired a single round from his gun, causing the intruder to flee.

The homeowner then secured his property and reported the incident to officers at the Shirvan Road Police Station.

Later that day, officers visited the Scarborough General Hospital where they met a man being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. During an interview, he reportedly admitted to entering the property at Sherwood Court and said he fled after hearing a loud explosion, only realising he was shot after feeling pain and seeing blood.

Investigations are ongoing.
