Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the time has come for a global war on gangs.
Speaking on Thursday at the National Security Council Seminar, he said global bodies must come together to tackle the negative impact of gangs on societies.
“Once we accept that the threats we face are transnational , then our response must be equality transitional and we must embrace greater security coordination and reciprocity, we need a global consensus that will create a global war on gangs .”
He said the gang problems must be met with the similar force as global terrorism.
He said if Jamaica is to solve the problem with gangs it must deal with the guns coming into the country.
Holness believes this can be done through global cooperation.
“So they use murder to create this fear, that brings the citizens under their control, because they feel helpless as the state is unable to protect them. The longer that the state The longer that the state is able to protect so if we are going to make a change inJamaica as it relates to the level of violence and murder that we have, we are going to have to make a significant impact on guns coming into the country and dealing with the criminal enterprises that we euphemistically call gangs.”
