A 58-year-old Laventille man who stole a bar of chocolate and olive oil from a supermarket in San Fernando was ordered to pay a $500 forthwith or serve 60 days hard labour.
Martin Gibbs, 58, gave an explanation for his actions when he appeared in the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Gibbs, a diabetic, claimed he was on his way to visit relatives in Point Fortin but his sugar level began dropping low.
“I was seeing blue,” he said.
Gibbs said he also wanted a bottle of extra virgin olive oil to rub his foot, but he had no money so he stole the items.
Court prosecutor Cleyon Seedan told Senior Magistrate Jo-Anne Conner that around 11.20 am on Friday a security officer at JTS Supermarket at Cross Crossing observed when Gibbs took a bar of Cadbury chocolate valued $30.99 and the oil valued $63.99 off the shelf and place them in his pants.
Gibbs then walked out of the supermarket without paying for the items.
The security officer confronted him, retrieved the items and called the police.
Gibbs, who pleaded guilty, claimed he worked as a security guard, but he ran out of money. He also claimed that he would have returned and paid for the items.
