A promi­nent Port-of-Spain at­tor­ney has been grant­ed own bail in the to­tal sum of $50,000 for al­leged­ly breach­ing a pro­tec­tion or­der twice.

The 48-year-old lawyer, a fa­ther of three, ap­peared vir­tu­al­ly be­fore Se­nior Mag­is­trate Alexan­der Prince yes­ter­day af­ter spend­ing the night in a cell at the po­lice sta­tion.

The at­tor­ney, of Cas­cade, was ar­rest­ed on Wednes­day af­ter­noon and tak­en to the Gen­der Based Vi­o­lence Unit in Ch­agua­nas. He was then trans­ferred to the Cou­va Mag­is­trates’ Court to await his ap­pear­ance be­fore a mag­is­trate.

The at­tor­ney had moved out of his mat­ri­mo­ni­al home in Freeport last May af­ter his mar­riage end­ed.

His ex-wife took out a pro­tec­tion or­der against him in May 23, 2022, that pro­hib­it­ed him us­ing abu­sive and threat­en­ing lan­guage to­wards her.

How­ev­er, it is al­leged that on Ju­ly 14 and De­cem­ber 31, 2022 he breached the or­der.

In ask­ing for bail, his at­tor­ney Shi­va Boodoo sub­mit­ted to the mag­is­trate that the at­tor­ney has been an at­tor­ney for 21 years, had no pre­vi­ous run-ins with the law and had ties to the com­mu­ni­ty.

Boodoo al­so ex­plained that the at­tor­ney did not re­side at the mat­ri­mo­ni­al home and had a health is­sue.

The mag­is­trate grant­ed him $25,000 own bail on each of the charges, but on the con­di­tion that he stays 100 feet away from his wife and has no con­tact with her. The mat­ter was ad­journed to Sep­tem­ber 1.
