Newly appointed Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Dr David Lee, has acknowledged the overwhelming demand for housing, as he settled into his first day in office, stating that the volume of requests already received is outpacing current capacity.

While careful not to make premature declarations, Minister Lee hinted at the challenges ahead as the ministry seeks to align its delivery with the promises outlined in the Government’s housing manifesto.

“From the time I was appointed, I've been swamped with requests,” Minister Lee revealed.

“I think presently, without getting too much involved or saying much, I think the demand outstrips the supply,” he told Guardian Media. “So, we would have to really work with the housing team to see how best we can deliver on the promises that we would have said about housing in our manifesto.”

Minister Lee also indicated that he will be looking at the possibility of revitalising HDC properties which residents in those communities have said have been neglected.
