Police Service Commission (PolSC) chairman Dr Wendell Wallace confirmed on Tuesday that Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher had not yet received formal notification lifting her suspension, but the letter could be delivered by Wednesday morning.
Harewood-Christopher was suspended after her arrest on 30 January, tied to the investigation into the illegal transfer of a sniper rifle to the Strategic Services Agency (SSA). On Saturday, Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard, SC, said there was enough to treat her as a suspect but not enough evidence to lay charges.
On Monday, reports indicated she may soon return to duty.
Dr Wallace confirmed the reinstatement letter was pending.
“We are hoping it be delivered sometime today or early tomorrow (Wednesday) morning,” he said.
Wallace said once Harewood-Christopher’s suspension is officially lifted, separate letters would be issued to:
-Acting Commissioner Junior Benjamin, returning to his substantive post of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP)
-Acting DCP Operations Curt Simon, reverting to his substantive rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP)
Asked whether the transitions might face internal challenges, Wallace said the TTPS was equipped to manage the process.
“It is a disciplined organisation and whatever has to take place, they will have to work that out internally,” he said.
“I can’t make pronouncements on what will or will not happen, but I can say they are expected to act in accordance with their rules, regulations and the hierarchical structure.”
