A 42-year-old street vendor appeared in the San Fernando Magistrate court virtually for assaulting two police officers.

The charges, five in all, stemmed from an incident along High Street, San Fernando on Monday following an altercation with Head of Municipal Police (south) Snr Supt Cecil Santana and other officers.

Police said the officers spoke to the woman three times about selling market produce, including pimento, chive and celery, from a cardboard box on the pavement as she was blocking the free passageway.

However, she refused to heed their warning.

When the officers tried to arrest her she allegedly became violent. While the officers were trying to subdue her, Santana and Cpl Lewis received injuries.

Lewis suffered a sprained waist while Santana received an injury to his thumb. She was eventually arrested and charged by WPC Cooper with assaulting two police officers, resisting arrest, pitching a stall and obstruction of a footpath.

The officers sought medical treatment.

And a man allegedly scuffled with the police, damaging an officer’s jersey and jewellery, when the police tried to arrest him in Penal. The incident occurred around 5.30 pm on Monday when the police responded to a report of a disturbance at Mora Drive, Sou Sou Lands.

PCs Heeralal and Daly saw a 25-year-old man standing in the roadway and shouting obscenities. While speaking to him, the officers detected that he was smelling of alcohol.

PC Heeralal told him about his behaviour and he reportedly replied, “Them is (expletive) thief.”

While attempting to arrest the suspect, PC Heeralal was hit on his shoulders while the suspect allegedly grabbed the neck area of the officer’s T-shirt and his gold chain.

While trying to help his colleague, PC Daly was hit by the man on his left wrist. The man was eventually subdued and taken to the Penal Police Station.

The officers as well as the man were medically examined at the Siparia District Health Facility.
