Trinidad has been placed under a Localised Flood Alert (Yellow Level) by the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service from 8:00 PM Thursday through 8:00 PM Friday.

According to the Met Office, high rainfall accumulations over the last two days have led to smaller watercourses becoming overwhelmed, while major rivers, like the Caroni River, are near threshold levels.

“With extended periods of rainfall forecasted for tonight and tomorrow and 60% chance of heavy showers and/or thunderstorms expected, localized ponding can occur and flooding in some areas due to filled drains and smaller water courses.”

The TTMS adds that flooding can be exacerbated at high tides which will be at approximately 8:00 PM Thursday, as well as at 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM Friday.

Major rivers continued to be monitored closely, but as of Thursday afternoon, they remain contained.

The color of the alert indicates the severity of the event and the probability of the event occurring. Currently, the alert level is Yellow. This means that the hazards are likely, but the severity of impacts is moderate for this particular alert. You should be aware of the hazards in your area associated with street, flash, and possible minor to moderate riverine flooding.

For a moderate Localized Flood Alert, there is the potential for possible injuries, where behavioral changes are required to ensure safety. There may be minor damage to property, with income-earning temporarily disrupted and a couple of communities affected.

The Met Office is advising the public to carefully monitor weather conditions and river/water levels, monitor updates from official sources, plan safety measures, and not take unnecessary risks. They also advise the public to avoid driving or wading through flood waters and follow the instructions of government officials.

The TTMS forecast for tonight and tomorrow calls for, “Partly cloudy to overcast conditions with extended periods of light rain. There is a medium (60%) chance of isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms mainly during the morning. Conditions are expected to settle by late afternoon. Gusty winds and street flooding likely near heavy showers or thunderstorms!”
