A 45-year-old man has been ar­rest­ed fol­low­ing a shoot­ing at his Cou­va home that ini­tial­ly ap­peared to be a rob­bery but was lat­er re­vealed to be a do­mes­tic dis­pute.

Around 8:35 pm on Mon­day, Syd­ney Singh, a dou­bles ven­dor, told po­lice that an un­known armed man en­tered his home at Fire Sta­tion Road, an­nounced a hold-up, and shot his com­mon-law wife, 48-year-old Kam­nee Thack­ur­deen.

But dur­ing fur­ther ques­tion­ing, Singh al­leged­ly ad­mit­ted the in­ci­dent stemmed from an ar­gu­ment be­tween the cou­ple.

Po­lice say a strug­gle en­sued over what ap­peared to be a firearm, and Thack­ur­deen was shot in the chest. She was first tak­en to the Cou­va Dis­trict Hos­pi­tal, then trans­ferred to the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal, where she re­mains in crit­i­cal con­di­tion.

Crime Scene In­ves­ti­ga­tors re­cov­ered a sil­ver ob­ject re­sem­bling a re­volver con­tain­ing one live and one spent .38 round. Of­fi­cers al­so took swabs from Singh’s hands for gun­shot residue.

He was ar­rest­ed, tak­en for med­ical treat­ment, and is now in cus­tody at the Cou­va Po­lice Sta­tion.
