A 45-year-old man has been arrested following a shooting at his Couva home that initially appeared to be a robbery but was later revealed to be a domestic dispute.
Around 8:35 pm on Monday, Sydney Singh, a doubles vendor, told police that an unknown armed man entered his home at Fire Station Road, announced a hold-up, and shot his common-law wife, 48-year-old Kamnee Thackurdeen.
But during further questioning, Singh allegedly admitted the incident stemmed from an argument between the couple.
Police say a struggle ensued over what appeared to be a firearm, and Thackurdeen was shot in the chest. She was first taken to the Couva District Hospital, then transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Crime Scene Investigators recovered a silver object resembling a revolver containing one live and one spent .38 round. Officers also took swabs from Singh’s hands for gunshot residue.
He was arrested, taken for medical treatment, and is now in custody at the Couva Police Station.
Enquiries are ongoing.
