A fam­i­ly out­ing turned trag­ic on Fri­day, when 78-year-old Car­los Sylvester, of St Fran­cois Val­ley Road, Chi­na­town, Bel­mont, drowned at Pool #1, Cau­ra.

Sylvester, along with his wife Cheryl and oth­er rel­a­tives, had gath­ered at the pop­u­lar wa­ter­fall spot for a birth­day cel­e­bra­tion.

Po­lice said at 5.20 p.m., he dove from a ledge in­to the riv­er but failed to resur­face, prompt­ing im­me­di­ate con­cern from his fam­i­ly.

Emer­gency ser­vices were con­tact­ed but the Coast Guard Res­cue team was un­able to re­spond due to fad­ing light, ac­cord­ing to a po­lice re­port.

How­ev­er, the Fire Ser­vice Search and Res­cue team ar­rived soon af­ter and ini­ti­at­ed a search at 8.31 pm. With­in min­utes, they re­cov­ered Sylvester’s body from the lo­ca­tion where he was last seen.

Dis­trict Med­ical Of­fi­cer Dr Am­ri­ta Ram­s­ingh ex­am­ined the body and con­firmed Sylvester’s death at the scene.

Au­thor­i­ties are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions in­to the in­ci­dent.

A man is re­cov­er­ing at the Er­ic Williams Med­ical Sci­ences Com­plex in Mt Hope af­ter be­ing in­jured in a shoot­ing in­ci­dent in St He­le­na on Sat­ur­day.

Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, the in­ci­dent took place at 4.30 a.m. near the Vice City Bar. The vic­tim was re­port­ed­ly in­volved in an ar­gu­ment with two oth­er in­di­vid­u­als when the sit­u­a­tion es­ca­lat­ed. Dur­ing the con­fronta­tion, one of the sus­pects dis­charged a weapon, strik­ing the man in the ab­domen and leg.

Emer­gency ser­vices were con­tact­ed and the in­jured man was tak­en to the hos­pi­tal, where he is re­ceiv­ing med­ical care.

Po­lice have since vis­it­ed the scene and launched an in­ves­ti­ga­tion, with in­quiries on­go­ing to de­ter­mine the cir­cum­stances sur­round­ing the in­ci­dent.

‘Friend’ tricks man of $$ dur­ing phone trans­ac­tion

A 28-year-old man from Lopinot Road, Ari­ma, has re­port­ed be­ing swin­dled out of $5,000 and US $500 in a lar­ce­ny trick at a pop­u­lar fast food out­let.

The in­ci­dent oc­curred at 4 pm on Thurs­day along Long Cir­cu­lar Road, Mar­aval.

Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, the vic­tim and a friend went to the lo­ca­tion, where he hand­ed over the sum of mon­ey to his friend, who in­tend­ed to pur­chase two iPhone 15 Pro cell­phones from a near­by es­tab­lish­ment. Af­ter ap­prox­i­mate­ly 20 min­utes, the friend re­turned with­out the phones, claim­ing he had giv­en the mon­ey to an un­known in­di­vid­ual who had sought to ver­i­fy the au­then­tic­i­ty of the US cur­ren­cy.

Ef­forts by both men to con­tact the in­di­vid­ual were un­suc­cess­ful.

The vic­tim lat­er re­port­ed that at­tempts to reach his friend to in­quire about the mon­ey were al­so in vain.
