A bar brawl turned dead­ly on Wednes­day night, when 33-year-old Den­zil Brew­ster of Princes Town was stabbed to death dur­ing a con­fronta­tion at La Ve­gas Bar in San Fer­nan­do.

Po­lice said around 8:30 pm, Brew­ster was lim­ing at the bar lo­cat­ed at the cor­ner of Lord Street and Cof­fee Street in San Fer­nan­do when a dis­pute erupt­ed be­tween him and an uniden­ti­fied man.

In front of sev­er­al wit­ness­es, the stocky as­sailant drew a knife from his waist and be­gan stab­bing Brew­ster mul­ti­ple times.

Off-du­ty po­lice of­fi­cer Kyle As­sivero, 24, of Clax­ton Bay (who is at­tached to the Cou­va Po­lice Sta­tion), tried to in­ter­vene but got in­jured.

Of­fi­cers of the South­ern Di­vi­sion Emer­gency Re­sponse Pa­trol (ERP) quick­ly ar­rived at the scene and trans­port­ed both Brew­ster and As­sivero to the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal.

How­ev­er, de­spite the ef­forts of the med­ical team, Brew­ster suc­cumbed to his in­juries around 9:12 pm while un­der­go­ing emer­gency surgery for wounds to his chest and up­per hip.

PC As­sivero is said to be in sta­ble con­di­tion.

The sus­pect, who fled the scene on foot, re­mains at large.

Of­fi­cers of Homi­cide Re­gion III, in­clud­ing PC See­dath and WPC Ram­per­sad, are con­tin­u­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions.
