An argument over $10 ended in death at a bar in Penal this morning.
Stephon Frontin, 21, of 8.5 mm Penal Rock Road, died around 12:45 am outside Seduction Bar at the SS Erin Road near Batchya Village, Penal.
Police said Frontin was liming with friends and during the lime, he asked one of his friends for $10. After collecting it, an argument broke out between Frontin and another man. Witnesses told police that Frontin went into his car, took out a cutlass and returned for the assailant.
Both men began fighting on the ground and during the melee, another man pulled out a firearm and shot Frontin in the head. He died on the spot. District Medical Officer Dr Durbal visited the scene and ordered the body to be removed to the Forensic Science Centre where an autopsy will be done on the body.
His mother, Arlene Trumpet, who suffers from renal failure, said she discharged herself from the San Fernando General Hospital on Monday against her doctor's advice to see for herself whether Frontin was truly dead.
Recalling the tender moments she shared with him before his death, Trumpet said he visited her at the hospital on Sunday.
"He came and hugged me. He said 'You all right? You know I love you, ma,'" Trumpet wept. She said Frontin supported her with her medical bills and during her most painful moments, he was the source of her comfort.
"He was a loving boy. He was a bit harden but he was not a bad person. He gave me my last kiss and said 'Ma, I love you' and then after that they killed him," Trumpet said.
Trumpet said she could not believe her son was gone and she had no idea who would help her now with medical bills. Pointing to her abdomen which was swollen, Trumpet said she knew she had taken a risk by discharging herself from the hospital but she was unable to stay there.
"I couldn't bear being there. I had to know if he was really dead," she cried. Trumpet said she was admitted to the hospital on Sunday after body toxins triggered by kidney failure caused her abdomen to swell abnormally.
Frontin's grandmother Lystra Hernandez described him as a kind and helpful grandson. Police said they have strong leads into the murder and will make an arrest shortly.
