Adrian Calliste survived an attempt on his life last year after being shot at point-blank range.

However, yesterday he was not so fortunate as gunmen pursued him into Building 1A Rushworth Street, San Fernando, and shot him dead.

The murder occurred around 10.30 am shortly after Calliste arrived to do a transaction.

A resident who requested anonymity said residents fled upon hearing the volley of gunshots.

“When the smoke cleared, we saw this man on the ground. We did not stay around to see who it was. All of us ran when we heard the shots,” the resident recounted.

Calliste, of South Oropouche, was found lying dead in a drain with multiple gunshot wounds to his body. He was wearing a red, green, and yellow vest, black three-quarter pants, and black slippers.

Police say it was a targeted attack.

Officers including PC Roopchand, PC Maingot, and PC Noor arrived on the scene first along with officers of the Homicide Bureau, Southern Division CID and Task Force.

Senior Supt Soodeen, Supt Singh, Supt Dhilpaul, ASP Persad, Insp Mohammed, and Insp Maharaj also visited and took statements from residents.

Witnesses reported seeing a man in a hoodie running from the area near the traffic light on Rushworth Street shortly after the gunfire. The suspect continued running eastward after the shooting.

Councillor for Les Efforts East/Cipero, Ryaad Hosein visited the scene.

He said the area was usually a quiet community.

In May, 20-year-old Darion Pierre of Rushworth Street was also shot dead and his body flung down a precipice at Cotton Hill, Gasparillo. His car had been stolen.

An autopsy conducted on his body at the Forensic Science Centre showed he died from a gunshot wound to the head. Police said it was likely he was already dead when he was thrown down Cotton Hill.

Anyone with information on the murders can call Crimestoppers at 800-TIPS.

Despite finding out just three days earlier—on December 23—that I had breast cancer, I still got dressed and showed up on December 26, Boxing Day, for a birthday party. I didn’t go to escape the truth. I went to remind myself I was still here, still living, still me.
