Me­dia icon June Gon­za­les, the first fe­male pro­gramme di­rec­tor of a Trinida­di­an ra­dio sta­tion, has passed away at the age of 91. Gon­salves, a for­mer an­nounc­er and the first fe­male pro­gramme di­rec­tor at Ra­dio Trinidad, died at her home in An­der­son Ter­race, Mar­aval, on Fri­day evening.

Gon­salves joined Ra­dio Trinidad in Au­gust 1956 and host­ed the woman's pro­gramme "Lis­ten Ladies."

She was al­so the voice of "Mrs Frico" on the pro­mo­tion­al pro­gramme Frico For Me in the late 1950s.

Gon­salves moved on to Trinidad and To­ba­go Tele­vi­sion (TTT) as a TV news­cast­er. She al­so worked with the Ro­man Catholic Church.

She host­ed sev­er­al pro­grammes, in­clud­ing a Catholic re­li­gious pro­gramme, “The Catholic Fo­rum of the Air”, on Sun­day af­ter­noons at 12.45.

In 2000, she be­came the first woman in T&T to be named a Dame Com­man­der of the Or­der of St Gre­go­ry the Great.

Gon­salves al­so served as sec­re­tary to the late arch­bish­op An­tho­ny Pan­tin un­til his death in 2000.
