A mentally ill man, who is said to be an outpatient of St Ann's Mental Hospital, allegedly went on a rampage on Thursday, threatening villagers in the Matelot area.

Police officers who responded on the scene were also threatened.

The mentally ill man, who was armed with a cutlass and a knife, reportedly attempted to chop one of the police officers.  However, the officer's partner drew his service firearm and fired two shots at the mentally ill man, who managed to escape injury and also evade the officers by running away into nearby bushes.

The incident occurred at about 5:24 pm along the Paria Main Road.

During a subsequent search for the outpatient, a team of police officers found the man, subdued him and arrested him.

The man was taken to the Toco Police Station where he is expected to be charged.
