Police are investigating a report that a man who was reported missing may have been killed, after his mother told officers she received multiple calls claiming he was shot during an altercation in the Beetham area and his body dumped in nearby locations.
A report has been made to police concerning the disappearance of 46-year-old Jamal Jessop, who was last seen on December 20.
The report states that Sherry Ann Jessop told officers her son has been suffering from a mental illness for several years and has been receiving medication and treatment through St Ann’s. She indicated that this was the first time he had ever been missing for such a prolonged period.
Police further recorded that later on December 21, Jessop received several telephone calls from people known to her. She declined to identify them, citing fears that doing so could endanger their lives.
According to the report, the callers claimed that Jamal Jessop was killed sometime between 2 am and 6 am on December 21 after an altercation at Phase 1, First Street, Beetham, during which he was shot.
The information provided alleged that his body was dumped either in a swamp at Sea Lots or near the WASA pump at Clear Water, along the Beetham Highway in Laventille.
Based on the information received, police conducted extensive searches on December 21 between 3 pm and midnight in the areas identified. The report noted that the searches were severely hampered by poor lighting conditions, dense foliage and difficult-to-access terrain.
No body was found.
Police said searches are expected to continue from 8 am on December 22 under improved lighting conditions, as investigations remain ongoing.
