A mentally ill man was shot and killed by police after he fought with officers who visited his Coryal home on Friday night. Police said officers were called to the house at the 12 1/2 mm Coryal Main Road at around 8:08 pm by a relative who reported that Forstin Augustus was behaving violently.
The relative guided the officers to a room at the side of the house where they interviewed Augustus for a short while before he reportedly began to act violently again. According to the police report Augustus, charged up to one of the officers and began fighting with him.
During the struggle the officer noticed the wooden handle of a cutlass in Augustus’ pants waist. As Augustus tried to reach for the cutlass he was shot in the chest. Augustus walked to a room at the side of the house where he died. A district medical officer visited the scene who declared Augustus dead.
