The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) is cautioning that over the next 48 hours, there is a strong chance of tropical cyclone formation as a tropical wave it has been monitoring makes its way across the Caribbean islands.
In a bulletin issued at 6:00 am today, the Met Service reports that at 2:00 am this morning (Monday 27th June 2022), the axis of this wave was located near 45-degrees-West.
The Met Service also noted an increase in the showers and thunderstorm activity associated with this tropical wave located about 950 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands.
“Environmental conditions appear conducive for further development, and a tropical depression is likely to form during the next couple of days before the system reaches the Windward Islands Tuesday night or possibly while moving westward across the southern Caribbean Sea Wednesday through Friday,” the Met Service forecasters advise. “A Hurricane Hunter aircraft from NOAA [the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] is scheduled to investigate the system this afternoon.”
The Met Service is urging interests in the Windward Islands to closely monitor the progress of this system.
“The chance of tropical cyclone formation is high (70%) during the next 48 hours, and also high (90%) over the next 5 days,” forecasters warn.
“Regardless of the development of the system, significant moisture associated with this system will bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to Trinidad and Tobago and the Windward Islands from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning,” the Met Service says.
There are no watches or warnings in effect at this time.
However, another Met Service update on the system can be expected at 6:00 pm today or sooner, depending how the system develops.
