The Trinidad and To­ba­go Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Ser­vice (TTMS) dis­con­tin­ued the River­ine Flood Alert for Trinidad on Mon­day af­ter­noon. In their alert dis­con­tin­u­a­tion, they ex­plained that wa­ter lev­els in ma­jor wa­ter­cours­es are on a down­ward trend. Ac­cord­ing to TTMS, ma­jor rivers “no longer pose a threat to sur­round­ing com­mu­ni­ties.”

On Mon­day evening, sig­nif­i­cant flood­ing was on­go­ing across parts of Spring Vil­lage, South Val­sayn, Madras Road, and Ca­roni Vil­lage as the Ca­roni Riv­er re­mained el­e­vat­ed while many of its trib­u­taries were well out­side their banks. The South Oropouche Riv­er’s trib­u­taries flood­ed parts of Wood­land, Debe, and Pe­nal on Mon­day. Parts of the Man­zanil­la Ma­yaro Road were al­so im­pass­able on Mon­day evening as the Nar­i­va and Or­toire Rivers were near thresh­old lev­els.

The Met Of­fice said, “ex­pect­ed rain­fall over the next 24 hours should not over­whelm these wa­ter­cours­es to cause over-spilling of their banks.” They added, “though some af­fect­ed ar­eas are still flood­ed, grad­ual runoff is an­tic­i­pat­ed.”

Heavy rain­fall over the week­end prompt­ed the TTMS to is­sue the River­ine Flood Alert (Yel­low Lev­el) on Sun­day ini­tial­ly for north­ern Trinidad, which was fur­ther ex­pand­ed to the en­tire is­land. Mul­ti­ple rivers, in­clud­ing the Ca­roni, North Oropouche, Ca­paro, South Oropouche, and Or­toire Rivers, flood­ed low-ly­ing ar­eas over the last 48 hours.

Ac­cord­ing to the TTMS, there is a low risk to pub­lic safe­ty, liveli­hoods, and prop­er­ty at a green alert lev­el. Al­though the alert has been dis­con­tin­ued, the TTMS still ad­vised the pub­lic to as­sess their en­vi­ron­ment for safe­ty con­cerns, avoid wad­ing through resid­ual flood wa­ter, re­main vig­i­lant, and con­tin­ue mon­i­tor­ing of­fi­cial in­for­ma­tion sources.
