Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen has urged those who may know who stole $90,000 from the San Fernando City Corporation or committed any other impropriety at any other corporation to come forward.

She also vowed to make public the person or people responsible for stealing the cash.

The T&T Police Service (TTPS) is investigating the disappearance of the money at the corporation’s Penitence Street location. The money, which represented fees and taxes collected between April 30 and May 16, was discovered missing by an employee on May 19.

Guardian Media had reported that around 3.15 pm on May 16, an employee of the corporation secured $6,534.50 in a four-drawer fireproof cabinet. The cabinet, however, already contained $83,465.50. The money was in sealed bank envelopes. The cabinet, located in an office on the western side of the building, was then locked.

Asked for an update on the investigation yesterday, Ameen said, “I will share with the public in a very short time.”

However, she warned regional corporations about financial impropriety and those who are aware of it.

She added, “What I want to say to all regional corporations, you have been starving for resources. You complained for a long time of not having resources. To have any kind of impropriety, any kind of mismanagement of your money is a serious indictment. When we identify the wrongdoers, we will make it public. We will have it fully investigated.

“But I want to say that anyone who knows of wrongdoing and remains silent, you are an accomplice.”

Investigators from the San Fernando CID have since conducted interviews with staff members. It was confirmed that multiple employees had access to both the cabinet and its key.

Last week, San Fernando Mayor Robert Parris said it was an administrative issue and had nothing to do with the political arm. However, he said CEO Heather Crawford had written a report to the permanent secretary and CPO for advice on how to proceed.
