Tobagonians have expressed mixed reactions following the departure of the United States-installed radar from the island.
While some residents are calling for greater transparency on its purpose and cost, others remain indifferent or unsure of its impact.
Jewel Greene-George, 40, said, "It still leaves a lot of questions to be answered. They have packed up and left but nobody has answered the questions: who was paying this US$3 million, what’s going on in terms of the narco-terrorism they were targeting. There are so many things unanswered and I do believe some transparency is needed. They were saying they were not sharing information because that will affect national security, but now that they are gone I think full disclosure is necessary. I think the citizens deserve it."
Tyreke Murphy, 19, from Glamorgan said, "I ain’t feel any change because first of all, it was brought in without anyone noticing until a leaked video. I don’t feel any change, probably people onboard with the whole situation might understand the whole protocol better."
Meanwhile, Shirnelle Saunders Baptiste, 35, a makeup artist, said, "I’m not sure exactly what the radar was doing exactly. Nothing personal, just my thing. I never put any extra thought into what the radar was doing here. I guess if it served its time, if that’s the right word, of what it came to Tobago to do, well then, all the best to new endeavours to the radar. I am here for whatever is next for Tobago."
