A Moruga couple is thankful to be alive after the roof of their home collapsed during torrential showers on Sunday.

Indera Torres Estevez and her husband Carlos, 54, were in the bedroom at their La Rufin Road home when they heard a crashing noise around 8.30 pm.

Recalling the scary ordeal yesterday, Torres Estevez said, “We were going to sleep. The rain was falling. It had a lil breeze and the roof just collapsed. The galvanize on the roof (over a bedroom) just collapsed.”

The 52-year-old woman said when she and her husband ran out of the house, they saw the electrical wires sparking.

“The galvanize push down the meter box and burst up the wires and that started sparking. My husband started to tape it up with plastic bags.”

Torres Estevez said she was scared that she would lose her entire house, as she thought the sparks would have ignited a fire.

“I was more afraid with all that spark and blue flame than the roof,” she lamented.

She said she was worried that another heavy bout of rain might damage the remainder of her home. She said her husband was attempting to use the old galvanize and pieces of plywood from the damaged portion of the house to build a makeshift structure for them to sleep in until better could be done.

Torres Estevez said since last year, they had been trying to get assistance to fix the roof, but admitted it had been an uphill battle.

The couple grows cassava and recently started rearing livestock to earn a living.

Torres Estevez said the Princes Town Regional Corporation assisted them with a mattress and tarpaulin. While grateful that they were not injured in the incident, she is pleading for any assistance to help them rebuild their home.

Anyone willing to assist them can contact 380-1058.
