A Mt Hope man carried out a citizen’s arrest on Sunday after he managed to wrestle away the gun from an armed intruder and contact the police while holding the suspect, who is 46 years younger than him, at gunpoint.
Police said the 68-year-old pensioner was in his kitchen around 12.45 pm on November 16 when he saw the 22-year-old suspect entering the premises via the front door.
The intruder ordered the homeowner to lie on the floor, but the victim resisted and instead rushed towards the suspect and grabbed the gun.
As the two struggled, the gun went off, hitting the glass front door.
The victim managed to wrest the firearm away from the intruder and promptly contacted the police while keeping the suspect at gunpoint.
A party of officers from the St Joseph Police Station responded and took the suspect into custody.
Officers later took the victim to the hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
They retrieved the suspect’s black and brown AKS 74U rifle with 20 rounds of live 5.56 ammunition and one spent 5.56 mm shell casing.
