Murder toll jumps to 161

The mur­der count in T&T stood at 161 yes­ter­day, as com­pared to 106 over same pe­ri­od last year.

Ac­cord­ing to the lat­est sta­tis­tics re­leased by the T&T Po­lice Ser­vice, vi­o­lent crimes stood at 1,238 for the pe­ri­od Jan­u­ary 1, 2022 to April 20 2022, in com­par­i­son to 1,402 dur­ing the same pe­ri­od in 2021.

There have been 223 re­ports of wound­ings and shoot­ings so far for the year, while in 2021 there were on­ly 193.

The fig­ure stands high for rob­beries, how­ev­er, as 680 have so far been re­port­ed, as com­pared to last year’s 649.

There was on­ly one re­port­ed case of kid­nap­ping with ran­som for the same pe­ri­od in both 2021 and this year.

Gen­er­al kid­nap­pings stood at 30 and one less than the fig­ure last year, 29.

There was al­so a sig­nif­i­cant de­crease in re­ports of rapes, in­cest and oth­er sex­u­al of­fences, with on­ly 138 for this year as com­pared to 418 last year.

There were sev­en se­ri­ous in­de­cen­cy re­ports and six last year for the same pe­ri­od - Jan­u­ary 1 to April 20.
