Private Denapoli Nicholai Greene, 27, who was killed on Sunday night, was not involved in a bar brawl over the weekend on the Avenue where a businessman was beaten.
This was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of the T&T Regiment Captain Cleavon Dillon. He was responding to questions sent to him by Guardian Media. He also dispelled rumours that Greene was a victim of bullying on the job.
“The soldier killed was in no way involved in any incident on the Avenue, there is no correlation between the two incidents and we must be sensitive to people’s families before spreading rumours and hearsay,” Dillon said.
“A soldier was gunned down, by criminals, in a public place. The question of bullying seems rather out of place and has no correlation to the incident at hand,” he added.
Dillon noted that the T&T Regiment “always stands ready to assist the TTPS in their investigations as we continuously do.”
Meanwhile, police sources said they are yet to determine a motive for the killing.
A police report stated that around 9.45 pm on Sunday, Greene was liming at La Puerta Avenue with a group of men when a silver car drove up to them. Two gunmen exited the vehicle and opened fire. Greene died at the scene. The three who were shot several times were taken to the St James Medical Complex for treatment.
The wounded men were identified as a 20 year old from Upper La Puerta Avenue, who was shot in the right leg; a 27-year-old from Roxborough Street, who was shot in the inner left and right thigh; and an 18 year old of Albasmond Drive, La Puerta Avenue, who was shot on the right thigh, left hip and left groin/pelvis area.
They remained warded in stable condition at the hospital up to late yesterday.
Investigations are continuing.
